CHOP Newsroom Highlights Clinical Futures’ Researcher for Study on Early-onset Sepsis
Dustin Flannery, DO, MSCE, an attending neonatologist at CHOP and a Core Faculty Member in Clinical Futures, was involved in a review of best practices, guidelines, and care path objectives for early-onset sepsis (EOS), an invasive bacterial or fungal infection that occurs in infants within the first week of life and can be fatal. The research underscored that providers must be aware of disparities in the prevention, screening, and treatment of neonatal EOS. Results indicated that further research examining racial and ethnic disparities in EOS must focus on determining the root causes for these differences.
The press release can be found on CHOP’s Newsroom here. The recommendations were also published in Clinics in Perinatology.

Pediatrician Perspectives on Incorporating Discussion of Police Encounters Into Anticipatory Guidance for Black Youth and Their Caregivers.
Two researchers from CHOP, including Clinical Futures’ Core Faculty Member George Dalembert, MD, MSCE, appeared on KPFA’s Law & Disorder podcast, hosted by Cat Brooks. They discussed their recently published peer-reviewed research letter in Jama Pediatrics, titled “Pediatrician Perspectives on Incorporating Discussion of Police Encounters Into Anticipatory Guidance for Black Youth and Their Caregivers." Police violence has been identified as a public health issue among public health experts as well as advocates and activists. What role, then, do doctors and pediatricians have in preparing patients and their families to be aware of this public health risk?
