The Academic General Pediatrics (AGP) Fellowship program offers research training to address key clinical, health services, and policy issues in primary care pediatrics. The goal of the fellowship is to prepare trainees to improve health and health care for underserved children through primary care research and leadership. The fellowship is intended for pediatric providers focused on health equity, underserved populations, and primary care. However, it is open to pediatric subspecialists who are interested in outpatient research to address child health disparities.  

The AGP Fellowship is a two-year program that is part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Primary Care Research Training Program. Fellows receive two years of stipend, benefits, tuition, and an allowance for travel and other training expenses. Fellows receive strong mentoring in developing research proposals, identifying research advisors and collaborators and refining research skills. Formal didactic training in primary care and health services research is provided through coursework at the University of Pennsylvania, culminating in a Master's in Clinical Epidemiology or Health Policy Research.

The AGP Fellowship values inclusion and diversity, and we encourage applications from pediatric providers whose insight and experiences will broaden and hence strengthen the scope and impact of primary care research. We believe that pediatric researchers should reflect the diversity of the children in our communities. Physicians who are United States citizens or permanent residents and have at least two years of postgraduate training are eligible to apply.

Coursework at the University of Pennsylvania

Fellows participate in a rigorous postdoctoral program that provides training in health policy, health economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, and other methodologic disciplines relevant to primary care research, including health disparities, multilingual, and qualitative research methods. Fellows complete Masters-level coursework at the University of Pennsylvania as part of either the Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) degree or the Masters of Science in Health Policy Research (MSHP) degree.

Applied Experience and Professional Development

Fellows are guided by an advisory team of methodology, content, and biostatistics mentors in the successful completion and publication of two general pediatrics research projects. Fellows also benefit from a host of professional development activities, including local and national conferences.

Clinical Responsibilities

Fellows are assigned clinical experiences for up to 10 percent of their time to enhance clinical skills, including skills necessary to work effectively across languages and culture.

CHOP participates in the NRMP Match Program and uses the APA Common Fellowship Application Form, which is updated each summer. Applicants to CHOP AGP must concurrently apply to the University of Pennsylvania MSCE or MSHP program.

Information about how to apply can be found on the APA website and our Application URL. Applications (including letters of reference) are due October 1^st. Applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled on a rolling basis. Applications lacking required materials will not be considered. Nor will applications using the prior year’s APA Common Fellowship Application Form.

The following materials must be submitted via the secure Application URL listed in the current year’s APA Common Fellowship Application Form:

• APA Common Fellowship Application Form
• Current e-mail addresses for three references as per the instructions provided on the  APA website. (Note that references should submit letters of recommendation and Confidential Reference Reports directly to our program via the secure Letters of Reference URL listed in the current year's APA Common Fellowship Application Form. Request letters and CRRs as soon as possible. Applications will not be considered until Letters and CRRs have been received.
• Updated curriculum vitae, including a list of publications (if applicable)
• Personal statement formatted as per the instructions provided in the APA Common Fellowship Application Form (please make sure your name is on the personal statement)
• Score report or transcript for parts 1, 2 and 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), taken within the seven year timeframe as required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or equivalent scores.
• If a graduate of a medical school outside of the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico, a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, or one that does not expire prior to the start of the fellowship.
• If not a citizen or non-citizen national of the United States, verification of permanent residency status.
