Rebecca Same is a faculty member at Clinical Futures and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also an Associate Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her work combines comparative effectiveness and implementation science research with quality improvement methodology to improve infection-related outcomes and reduce antibiotic-associated harm in children. Her prior research includes studies evaluating optimal antibiotic choice for osteomyelitis and duration of therapy for community-acquired pneumonia as well as a study characterizing the prevalence of antibiotic-associated adverse events in children. Her current work focuses on optimizing the diagnosis of urinary tract infections in children and reducing unnecessary treatment for acute respiratory tract infections in children in the outpatient setting.
Dr. Same is also interested in improving infection-related outcomes for children with end stage kidney disease (ESKD). She is a faculty member of the SCOPE Collaborative: Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric ESKD and a member of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis workgroup that developed the 2024 Updated Clinical Practice Guideline for the Prevention and Management of Peritoneal Dialysis Associated Infections in Children. Her research in this area centers on reducing culture-negative peritonitis in children and identifying optimal durations of therapy for children with dialysis-associated peritonitis.
Dr. Same received her AB in Spanish, French, and Biology from Georgetown University. She received her MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in pediatrics and fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases.
