Clinical Futures is pleased to recognize Aditi Vasan, MD, MSHP for receiving a 2023 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient-Centered Research Career Development Award (K08). This highly competitive award program provides individuals with a clinical doctorate degree who are interested in health services research with salary and research support for 3-5 years to advance their research career development experience. Dr. Vasan is an instructor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, a general pediatric hospitalist at CHOP, and a Core Faculty member at Clinical Futures and PolicyLab.

“I am excited to build upon my previous research on implementing and evaluating social needs screening and referral programs, reducing administrative burdens to improve access to government benefit programs, and quantifying care coordination burdens of parents and caregivers of children with medical complexity,” said Dr. Vasan. “With this award, I will focus on improving support in the post-hospitalization care transition period for children with chronic conditions and their families.”

Partnering for Impact

Partnering with families of medically complex children, providers who care for these children, social workers, and community health workers, and other key experts, Dr. Vasan and her colleagues will design and test an intervention to help parents and caregivers navigate complex health and social service systems and access needed medical care, government benefits, and community-based resources.

Aims:

  1. Identify social needs that are associated with decreased access to preventive care and increased acute care use among hospitalized children with chronic conditions.
  2. Develop an intervention aimed at addressing both unmet social needs and care coordination needs for pediatric patients with chronic conditions.
  3. Determine feasibility and acceptability and assess preliminary efficacy of this novel intervention.

“Dr. Vasan is tireless in her quest to improve the wellbeing of children through rigorous and actionable research focused on enhancing equity in food security, childhood injury/safety, and the broader forces that shape health outcomes,” said Chén Kenyon, MD, MSHP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, pediatric hospitalist at CHOP, and Core Faculty member Clinical Futures and PolicyLab. “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to both mentor and learn from her thus far, and I am eager to continue our collaborations and witness the next stages in her research journey.”
