Erum A. Hartung, MD, MTR

Dr. Hartung's clinical and research focus is in genetic kidney diseases, particularly autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). She is the Co-Director of the Combined Kidney/Liver Program for patients with ARPKD and other genetic hepatorenal fibrocystic disorders (ciliopathies). Her research interests include developing new kidney and liver imaging biomarkers for ARPKD and other kidney diseases, including kidney transplant, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound. This work involves close collaborations with the Departments of Radiology at both CHOP and Penn.

Dr. Hartung also investigates the natural history and clinical complications of ARPKD, and is the site principal investigator for the first ever clinical trial of a disease-modifying therapy for ARPKD. In addition, she studies neurocognitive outcomes in children with kidney disease. In her role as the Director of the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program at CHOP, she helps to train the next generation of pediatric nephrologists and serves as a research mentor to pediatric nephrology fellows in various research projects.

Among her notable career achievements, Dr. Hartung:

  • Received a K23 Career Development Award in 2016 from the National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
  • Was named chair of the Research Committee of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, from 2015-2018
  • Serves as a member of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation's Science Advisory Committee and PKD in Children Council; she is also the lead author of the PKD Foundation ARPKD Patient Handbook
