Dr. Patterson Gentile is a physician scientist specializing in child neurology and headache medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. At CHOP, she is a Fellow of the Center for Injury and Prevention, the clinical neurology lead and a scientific investigator within the Minds Matter Concussion program, and an attending physician in the Pediatric Headache Program. She has served as the Director of the Headache Fellowship since 2022.
Dr. Patterson Gentile completed her MD and PhD in vision neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by a child neurology residency and headache fellowship at CHOP. Her clinical and scientific work focus on improving the care of youth with primary and secondary headache disorders through solutions that work in the real world. Her research has focused on developing blood, electrophysiologic, and digital biomarkers to guide management of post-traumatic headache and migraine. Her research includes using wearable biosensors to collect real-world data to elucidate the behavioral impact of light sensitivity on youth with migraine. Furthermore, she is exploring wearable biosensors as a tool to improve daily habits including sleep, physical activity, and daily light exposure, to promote health and improve quality of life in youth with chronic pain.
On a national level, Dr. Patterson Gentile is an active member of the American Headache Society and has been Chair of the Post-Traumatic Headache Special Interest Group (elected in 2024). She also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for Global Light Commons, an open standards-based infrastructure designed to harmonize and standardize real-world light exposure data.
